SEGA has been on a roll with their recent crop of releases. The Yakuza and Persona series faced a huge surge in popularity. Ports of Two Point Hospital and Bayonetta introduced the series to new audiences, collecting new fans along the way. Thanks to these games, SEGA was named Metacritic’s publisher of the year.
In the past couple of years, Bethesda, 505 Games, and Electronic Arts all had their moment in the Metacritic spotlight. In the previous year, SEGA was much lower on the Metacritic totem pole. Just last year, they were ranked at #18. Their last top ranking was in 2016. The ranking is calculated by these four criteria:
- Average Metascore
- Percentage of scored products with good reviews
- Percentage of scored products with bad reviews
- Number of titles scored 90 or higher
Annapurna Interactive came in at #2, follow by Capcom, Sony, and Activision Blizzard. Here’s Metacritic’s official top 10 list:

The Persona and Yakuza series were the company’s top 5 scored games of 2020. Bayonetta and Two Point Hospital ports helped push them over the top with their own ports. 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim was SEGA’s only original IP of 2020, scoring 85 based on 69 critics.
