SEGA Nerds Spotlight: Emilie Bendix Engmann
In an industry that is surrounded by it, animation is certainly a field that demands patience and attention to detail. Emilie Engmann has decided to pursue her passion for animation, character design, and storytelling into a career. Each of Emilie’s projects (like the video above) were created out of love and dedication to the craft, and she has taken the next step by enrolling in The Animation Workshop. The Workshop is located in Viborg, Denmark, where animators from across the globe (like Pixar and Dreamworks) come to share their talents to aspiring students.
Emilie recently challenged her friend to redesign various characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog series, and we really enjoyed the end result. We were thrilled to sit down with Ms. Engmann and learn a little bit more about her background as an animator.
SN: Hello Emilie! Tell us a little about what you do
Emilie: I am currently finishing my bachelor in character animation and on the side I do a lot of fanart and I recently got back into Sonic! A friend of mine and I set up a challenge to redesign a sonic character each week, which is so far going pretty steady and is gaining a lot more positive feedback than we thought it would! It’s amazing to see all these hardcore SEGA fans supporting our redesigns.
SN: What made you want to go into animation?
Emilie: I’ve always loved to draw but it took me years to figure out what exactly I wanted to do in the field of art. It wasn’t until I found out that my country had an animation school, that I decided that that was were I wanted to go.
SN: What would you say is the most difficult and enjoyable part of your career?
Emilie: I’d say the most difficult part is acquiring the needed skills and figuring out exactly what I want to work with. Despite that I study as a character animator, I’ve found out that I love to work with concept art as well. It’s tough to find out what to base your future career on. The most enjoyable is the same as the most difficult: I love to be diverse with my art and spread my skill set as wide as possible! Thankfully I’m still in school so I got some time left to think.
SN: Do you remember your first gaming-related memory? If so, what was it?
Emilie: Watching my brothers play Heroes of Might and Magic IV!
SN: Did you have a favorite SEGA game growing up?
Emilie: I actually got into SEGA super late and my first introduction to a Sonic game was Sonic 06 when I was about 15 years old. Despite that it’s not the best Sonic game, I was immediately hooked and I’ve been a fan of Sonic ever since!
SN: Besides animation, what else do you like to do in your spare time?
Emilie: I have various hobbies including cosplay photography, youtube, cooking, fitness and of course gaming. I like to try and be creative in as many different ways as possible to keep myself motivated and engaged in art.
SN: Tell us a bit about your upcoming projects
Emilie: The next big thing is finishing my short film for my bachelor and then I’ll begin my internship and finish my education!
