SEGA Teases Collaboration With Designer Shoe Company Lavair
Hardcore retro SEGA nerds will recall that the boys in blue have a bit of a history in terms of shacking up with shoe manufacturers. It makes sense, right? Shoes are cool, SEGA presents itself as cool; match made in Heaven.
As early as 2001, Sonic the Hedgehog himself sported Soap grinding shoes, as he leapt and dashed through an environment littered with billboards hawking those very same booties. Oh, and also a blimp paying homage to the ‘Got Milk’ campaign, just to crank up the capitalism dial. More recently, industry giant Puma put out a range of SEGA and Sonic inspired footwear, ranging from simple blue numbers to shoes fashioned specifically after those famous red-and-white sneakers. Cosplayers need look no further.
So it should come as absolutely no surprise that SEGA Europe have unveiled a collaboration with Lavair, a company known for high-end, designer shoes. And, presumably, for their high-end prices. You can check out the Tweet which broke the news below:
While exact details about the nature of the project were not forthcoming in the announcement, it appears to be themed around the Mega Drive (that’s Genesis to everyone further to the West than me) to mark the system’s anniversary-ish. It isn’t clear what form the collab will take at this stage, but luckily we have good old historical precedent to give us some clues. One can reasonably expect a selection of products, primarily shoes, in the garish colour scheme that made that console’s marketing campaign so vibrant, successful and inextricably 90s.
No release date has been set for the range yet, but you can bet we’ll be on it to update you all when it lands. We might even get a few of our lads to model the shoes for you. Have a little catwalk and everything. We really do spoil you.
