SEGA unveils Sonic Frontiers trailer during The Game Awards
Are you excited to dash through Sonic Frontiers' open world next year?
This year, Sonic the Hedgehog celebrated his 30th birthday. As such, SEGA compiled a multitude of anniversary-inspired Sonic content. From merchandise to collaboration events in other games, 2021 was the year for the Blue Blur. However, no announcement was quite as big for Sonic as the reveal of a new game.
The game was first announced in May this year at the Sonic Central livestream. The teaser trailer showed during the livestream, however, offered very little in terms of what to expect. The video featured the Blue Blur speeding through a forest. Afterwards, a cryptic logo appeared on screen, followed by the release window of 2022.
After months of silence, SEGA finally debuted the official trailer for Sonic Frontiers last night at The Game Awards 2021. You can watch the reveal trailer below.
Sonic races into a new frontier!
The trailer opens with Sonic racing through the woods as a cloud of dust chases after him. Sonic dodges explosives as a voice urges him to follow. Upon reaching the edge of a cliff, however, the high intensity of the trailer slows to reveal breathtaking shots of the game’s landscape.
The locations, called Starfall Islands, steal the show as Sonic Frontiers boasts being the very first “open-zone” Sonic title. As the Blue Blur, players will take on imposing enemies as they dash through dense forests and across mountainsides marked with overflowing waterfalls. The gorgeous shots in the trailer additionally show off what appears to be several ancient ruins.
Fans point out that Sonic Frontiers seems to take inspiration from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. However, the full scope of the “high velocity open-zone freedom” will be seen as Sonic Team shows off gameplay.
Sonic Frontiers will mark the future of the franchise.
Currently, the developers remain optimistic that Frontiers will evolve what fans expect from a Sonic game. According to Sonic Team USA creative officer Takashi Iizuka, it will set the foundation for the next decade of the series. Iizuka further elaborates that the new game will be a major next step for the franchise and completely change what to expect from a modern Sonic game.
Sonic Frontiers is a huge leap forward for the franchise, delivering an evolved gameplay experience that can be enjoyed by longtime Sonic fans and action-adventure enthusiasts alike. With the effort of the talented developers at Sonic Team Japan, we’ve created an all-new style of gameplay experience for Sonic the Hedgehog, where players will be able to explore lush and expansive landscapes with Sonic’s signature speed and abilities.
