Shaggy from Scooby-Doo is now canon in Mortal Kombat, or is he?

Things are a bit more spooky in the Mortal Kombat universe. Sure, the ultimate fighters have seen their fair share of weird. But nothing quite compares to Crystal Cove’s brand of spooks. And it seems that Scooby-Doo and the gang could be headed to a showdown with brutal forces. Or at the very least, Shaggy is. Is this just another of Fred’s traps? Zoinks!

Speculation has circled NetherRealm studios for awhile trying to suss out clues as to who could show up in the Mortal Kombat franchise, whether it is a DLC character inclusion, or more recently, outings on the screen. So, when Warner Bros. Animation studios released a teaser ahead of Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms featuring Shaggy, fans giggled, but wondered. The creepy incarnation of the usually waaay hungry and laid-back, man, flashes green glowing eyes and a wicked smile as he delightfully strangles the usually bad-ass Scorpion.

Maybe it’s the weirdness of it all that stuns the “get over here” fighter into speechlessness, or perhaps he’s just waiting for a scooby-snack. Either way, it does appear that one type of Shaggy is prowling the Realms. This particular ghoul is from a meme inspired by “Ultra Instinct Shaggy” and virtually canonizes Crystal Cove. In addition to the teaser, Matthew Lillard came back to voice the opening logo scene of the film as Shaggy.

Ultra Instinct Shaggy first appeared when YouTuber Midya superimposed Shaggy’s fighting scene from the 2011 film Scooby-Doo! Legend of the Phantosaur and remixed it with the song “Ultimate Battle” from the Dragon Ball Super. It gained a devoted following and spawned fan art and memes as tall as a Shaggy sandwich. Petitions to have Shaggy included as a DLC for Mortal Kombat gained pop, but ultimately failed.

What does it mean for either franchise? It’s hard to tell. There are so many open doors here, and the animated world of Scooby-Doo is endless in its pursuit of crossovers including WWE, Supernatural and DCU. However, we’ll probably have to wait awhile before the Scooby gang shows up in any of the Mortal Kombat games. In the meantime, have a few laughs, and wonder- “Scooby- Doo, where are you?”
