Shin Megami Tensei V sells over a million units worldwide
The historical milestone marks a new sales record for the series!
Last night, ATLUS West announced on Twitter that Shin Megami Tensei V officially sold one million copies worldwide.
The exciting milestone marks the first time in its 35-year history that a mainline Shin Megami Tensei title sold a million copies. While its spinoff series Persona reached worldwide mainstream attention, Shin Megami Tensei retained a smaller cult following. However, the fifth entry’s unprecedented success could mean even bigger things to come for the series. Therefore, in celebration, the game’s character designer Masayuki Doi drew an illustration of the game’s protagonist as a special thank you.
This is the second sales milestone the latest game passed. In fact, in Famitsu’s New Year’s 2022 greetings article, ATLUS revealed that the fifth Shin Megami Tensei game already passed 800,000 units. By that point it already surpassed the fourth game’s lifetime sales in less than two months from release.
Shin Megami Tensei V released last November for Nintendo Switch. The newest game in the JRPG franchise follows a being not quite human or demon, known as the Nahobino. Throughout the game, the Nahabino must overcome obstacles in a war between angels and demons. Along the way, players must make moral choices on who to save and who to sacrifice.
ATLUS has big plans this year
As ATLUS continues celebrating the massive success of Shin Megami Tensei V, the company also has big plans for another new game. Coming as a huge surprise to fans, the long-awaited sequel to 1997’s Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers is coming. Dubbed the title Soul Hackers 2, the new ATLUS title releases on August 26 this year. It will be available for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PC.
In addition, ATLUS also has big plans to celebrate Persona’s 25th anniversary. In March, the company announced the schedule for Persona 25th FES. The event will last from May 28 to July 10.
With all the achievements ATLUS is hitting, it’s clear that 2022 is a great year to be an ATLUS fan. In addition, the massive sales milestone for Shin Megami Tensei V points to bigger things to come for the franchise.
