Someone’s hacked the Game Gear Micro

I love an easy headline. Gets right to the point, doesn’t it? Small, bitesize, digestible. No mincing words, no mucking about, no expecting the reader to decipher arcane text to get even the vaguest understanding of what a story is about. Nope, none of that today. I’ll spare you all.

If I had to top an (incredibly niche) list of ‘Systems That Would Be Least Likely For Hackers to Invest Their Time Into’ – you can have that one for free, BuzzFeed – the Game Gear Micro would be the one. The lowly little handheld has never really attracted the levels of attention that its infinitesimal compatriots on the Nintendo side of the fence have done; but it’s a powerful, fun gadget in its own right, allowing access to a decent library of Game Gear titles while looking stylishly pocketable all the while. It ain’t necessarily practical for longform play, but is sure is lightweight.

To say nothing of the inevitable eye strain. Even gnats would need a trip to Specsavers after playin’ this thing.

If you have very small hands and were hoping that someone might someday find a way to make a wider variety of games playable on the Micro, though? Well, first of all – why? And second of all – you’re in luck, you wackos, you. A Twitter user named GoodlyMike has reported that users on the SEGAXtreme forums have hacked the system, and now, with only the slightest amount of fiddling and investment in the required cables, you can now boot ROMs on it. Huzzah (?)

“Finally”? “Finally“?! There was demand?!

I’m just glad that chipmunks who want to relive their 90s childhood playing SEGA games are now being catered for. It’s the (very) small steps forward towards inclusivity that warm this reporter’s cynicism-mired heart.

Will you be picking up a Game Gear Micro and giving this a shot? Let us know!

Via, Twitter.
