Sonic Colors Ultimate Announced for Autumn 2021
We got it in our sight: the upres feels so right.
Yep, after months of speculation and circular debates within the Sonic the Hedgehog community – topped off with a nice variety of rumours, which we of course reported on, you lucky devils – it’s finally out in the open: a remaster of the critically acclaimed Wii title, Sonic Colors, is headed for almost every platform under the sun this September. Except, of course, for Steam, which always seems to get the shaft in these deals (Sora says hi); it’s going to be Epic Store exclusive from the look of it.
This title comes as literally no surprise to anyone with their finger even remotely on the pulse of Sonic news, as prominent YouTubers, industry insiders and leakers alike all but confirmed its existence weeks ago – it’s therefore perhaps the worst kept gaming secret in some time. Ah well, by fair means or ludicrous, it’s here, and from what we can see in the trailer it seems to be a pretty basic upscale of the 2010 480p original. Though Colors was and still is a beautiful game, it’s showing its age these days, and we can see some pretty awful jaggies and slowdown in the brief moments we were shown. Might just be the video, though, so we’ll reserve judgement.
Nothing shown in the preview appears drastically different from the old release, save for the rainbow jump rings which have had a serious shine-up, and the fact that, as some eagle-eyed fans have spotted, Sonic seems to be wearing golden and silver shoes in some frames. Trick of the lighting engine, or a migration of Forces’ dress-up mechanic? Time will tell.
The announcement came as part of Sonic’s 30th anniversary stream, which included, among other things, a preview of a Werehog action figure, an absolutely horrifying alternate Sonic skin for the player characters in the Tokyo 2021 Olympics videogame, and a miniscule thirty-second CGI trailer for a 2022 project of some sort. A game, animation, something else? They neglected to mention, but it features the hedgehog pulling a Signs and mowing some sort of symbol into the local foliage. Sonic: Deforestation coming soon, perhaps?
