Sonic Community Manager Addresses For-Profit Fan Games Controversy
Fan games are arguably one of the major pillars of the Sonic community. Whilst some companies would strangle their fans to death if given the chance, SEGA remains one of the few who not just accepts but embraces their community’s efforts. It’s this open approach that has allowed so much creativity to thrive, and with Sonic Mania being proof that fan works can lead to big chances, it’s no wonder so many continue to contribute.
However, a topic of discussion recently has been the monetization of fan games with Sonic Omens at the centre of it. Whilst the game looks impressive, fans have taken issue with the teams use of Patreon with concerns that attempting to make money on a fan game may lead to SEGA tightening the reins on future fan projects. Others feel the team only uses Patreon to fund development and with the game remaining free aren’t profiting at all.
Addressing the issue, Sonic Social Media Manager Katie said. “So long as no profit is involved,” using Sonic in fan games is fine. Naturally, there’s no 100% guarantee but it’s a good rule of thumb to follow to keep your fan projects safe.
Katie continues by saying. “We can handle outliers’ case-by-case as we notice them, but our goal isn’t to stifle everything.” It’s certainly a relief to see that the current model will remain but with some clarity it’ll be easier for fans to know the boundaries.
When asked about donations, Katie claims it’s a grey area, but. “Best to avoid if possible.” People have been happy with the message, with it being clear that keeping the community open is the goal. Hopefully with all this in mind, what is and isn’t okay should be a lot clearer now.
