Sonic Frontiers will bring Sonic to the next level with new combat styles

Takashi Iizuka explains that Sonic Frontiers will feature mechanics that feel fresh but retain the Blue Blur's identity.

In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Sonic Team’s Takashi Iizuka discussed how Sonic Frontiers will fully utilize next-gen hardware.

Iizuka explains that the new game will deliver a true “open zone” experience by utilizing the power of next-gen consoles. According to Iizuka, the ambitious new game completely reworks all of the Blue Blur’s key movements and actions. By building the core mechanics from scratch, the developers hope to give players a fresh experience that takes advantage of the large open levels.

With Sonic Frontiers, we are challenging ourselves to deliver an all-new style of Sonic action adventure. We’re once again expanding the Sonic Universe, bringing in new environments and additional features, to create a totally new type of open-zone experience.

According to Iizuka, one of the biggest challenges with designing a new Sonic game is evolving the mechanics without taking away from the character’s core traits. With Frontiers, the developers challenged themselves to adapt the Blue Blur’s iconic speed to the game’s vast landscapes.

We are focused on bringing Sonic to the next level and ensuring that he’s fully represented as the character that fans know and love, while still making his new form exciting.

Iizuka further adds that Frontiers will incorporate new features that will feel fresh while also retaining Sonic’s core identity. To accommodate the large environments, Sonic’s new adventure will also feature new combat styles and exploration options. The new mechanics will utilize the Blue Blur’s speed and agility on both the battlefield and for traversal.

Sonic Frontiers: an “open-zone” adventure

One question many fans have about the new game is whether it will feature one large open world or multiple large levels. Throughout the game’s marketing, SEGA has been carefully cryptic by using the term “open-zone”. Although GamesRadar asked Iizuka to elaborate further, the lead creative officer declined comment. Instead, he states SEGA will share more information on the game’s environment later this year.

SEGA first teased Sonic Frontiers last May at the Sonic Central livestream. However, its official announcement came during The Game Awards 2021. The Blue Blur’s “open-zone” adventure will feature a new world with breathtaking landscapes to explore. Sonic Frontiers launches this holiday season for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. You can watch the official trailer below.
