Sonic the Hedgehog 2 official trailer has us hyped for the new movie
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 races into theaters April 8, 2022!
Following the smash-hit success that was the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie, a sequel was sure to follow. Sure enough, this past March, production for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 began. After months of anticipation, the official trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 premiered last night at The Game Awards 2021. You can watch the official trailer below.
The plot focuses on Robotnik’s discovery of a powerful emerald, said to be, “the source of ultimate power.” Undoubtedly, the giant green emerald is one of the Chaos Emeralds from Sonic & Knuckles. However, with the clear importance it has on the plot, it’s likely not just a regular Chaos Emerald. The foreshadowing dialogue of Robotnik hints that this may be the Master Emerald, which has the power to control the other Chaos Emeralds.
Iconic characters from the Sonic franchise take the stage
After being first revealed at the end of the first film, Sonic’s longtime best friend Tails will play a major role in Sonic 2. Upon their introduction, it appears as though this is the first time they meet within the film’s universe. However, it’s clear that Tails knows Sonic. To voice the character, longtime Tails voice actor Colleen O’Shaughnessy reprises her role.
The trailer also introduces longtime staple in the Sonic franchise Knuckles the Echidna to the big screen. Played by Idris Elba, Knuckles takes on the role of an antagonist, working alongside Robotnik. Presumably, Knuckles was tricked to working with Eggman in similar fashion to the story of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. After Sonic and Knuckles meet, a short bout ensues that leaves the Blue Blur down for the count.
Paying homage to some classic vehicles
Overall, the trailer is packed with fanservice and Easter eggs. One noticeable inclusion (which is also featured prominently on the movie poster) is the iconic biplane, The Tornado. First featured in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on SEGA Genesis, this plane became a staple of the franchise. Sonic and Tails aren’t the only ones with their iconic vehicles either, as the trailer also shows off Robotnik’s famed Egg Mobile from the original videogame as well.
