Sony announces partnership with VOIP service Discord

As PC gaming flourishes, console gamers have dipped their toes into the wonders of Discord. Console giant Microsoft wanted to dip their toes into the VOIP market yet again. News surfaced in March in regards to Microsoft wanting to purchase Discord. The $10 billion purchase fell off, as it appeared that Discord didn’t want to sell the service. In a Sony blog post they announced that they worked out a partnership.

“Together, our teams are already hard at work connecting Discord with your social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network.” Announced by Jim Ryan, Sony President and CEO in the blog post. “Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together. Empowering players to create communities and enjoy shared gaming experiences is at the heart of what we do, so we are beyond excited to start this journey with one of the world’s most popular communication services.”

It’s under assumption that this has been because of the cross play of various PC and PlayStation titles. Street Fighter V , Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Dead By Daylight are the most popular games that come to mind. This might open up applications for the consoles opening up communications for PC gamers to be able to chat with their console counterparts.
