Sony has officially formed PlayStation Studios Mobile Division
The PlayStation Studios Mobile Division operates independently of the rest of Sony's game studios.
Sony has generally stayed outside of the mobile game market, focusing more on home consoles and forming partnerships with developers. But recent initiatives at the company seem to be changing that, as Sony is beginning to move into this market with a brand new studio. Sony announced the formation of PlayStation Studios Mobile Division, an independent studio focused solely on mobile gaming.
The announcement also coincides with Sony’s acquisition of new indie studio Savage Game Studios. Formed in 2020, the company’s first title will be a “AAA mobile live service action game” for Sony.
“This acquisition reaffirms Sony Interactive Entertainment’s commitment to delivering innovative experiences to new players around the world by expanding to additional platforms,” head of PlayStation Studios Hermen Hulst told IGN. “PlayStation Studios must continue to expand and diversify our offering beyond console, bringing incredible new games to more people than ever before.”
Inside the new PlayStation mobile studio
With Sony’s recent commitment to launching games on PC, making the next step into the mobile market does make sense. We don’t know what Sony’s plans are exactly for this studio and what their initial line-up will be.
The only hint we have is the AAA action game being worked on at Savage Game Studios. This studio was founded by industry veterans from companies like Insomniac Games, Rovio, Zynga, and Supercell. So they have fairly deep connections to both Sony and mobile games already, which is encouraging.
“I’m really excited about what Savage is working on and I’m confident they will deliver a high-quality experience,” Herst continued.” Our move into mobile, like our expansion into PC and live service games, strengthens our capabilities and our community, and complements PlayStation Studios’ purpose to make the best games that we can.”
