It’s a dark day for both Idris Elba and Knuckles the Echidna fans everywhere: the actor recently confirmed that our favorite spike-handed echidna will not have a sexy voice in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Elba (who just a few months ago confirmed his involvement in the Sonic movie sequel) remained tight-lipped as the interviewer tried to learn more about his role.
Idris Elba is maintaining relative silence on the role — understandably, as contractual obligations would force him to stay quiet. But the acclaimed Luther and MCU actor did reveal one thing: his voice for Knuckles isn’t going to be sexy. As he told Screen Rant:
Honestly, I cannot say. Contractually, I cannot say anything. But I wouldn’t say he was sexy. I don’t think I’m going for that. That’s for sure.
Idris Elba
Elba officially announced his casting as Knuckles in August. According to reports, Jason Mamoa had also been offered the role, and on Twitter, there was a significant push to have Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson voice the echidna. However, Idris Elba will undoubtedly deliver a memorable performance as Knuckles — even if it isn’t sexy.
Why isn’t Idris Elba going for a sexy Knuckles voice?
For many, it might seem somewhat odd for Elba to highlight this potential aspect of Knuckles’ character. Yet considering his naturally seductive Londoner voice and reputation as a sex symbol, it does make sense that he would clarify that he’s not going for that this time around.
Personally, I find it very hard to believe that Elba can say anything without sounding sexy. He just exudes that suave, confident energy. But should his assertions be proven right and his Knuckles voice is decidedly not sexy, that would serve as a testament to the phenomenal acting chops Idris Elba brings to the table every time.
As of yet, a trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 hasn’t surfaced. It’s only once we get a look at the movie that we can fully judge whether or not Elba’s claims of a non-sexy echidna voice are true.
