Square Enix files trademark for Gex in Japan
Reboots and series revivals are happening all over gaming right now! We are getting Klonoa back, Kao the Kangaroo, and Gex! Wait. Gex? That little lizard that had three games and popped off 90’s cultural references every ten seconds? HE’S coming back?
According to a new trademark, he could be. Square Enix has filed a trademark in Japan for Gex. They did the same last year in Europe. No US trademark has been filed yet. But the fact it’s been done in two countries now means there’s a good chance something is being planned. You can check out the confirmation tweet below.
Gex? Really?
Lock and load, little lizard! Because I’m not sure how to even begin with the idea of Gex returning. A collection of his three games makes the most sense to me. They are not available anywhere besides their original discs/carts. But it could be a remaster of the three games as well. 3D platformers from the 90s have gotten the remake/remaster treatment to excellent results over the last couple of years? It’s not a crazy idea.
But…. Gex is such a product of the 90s. If you’ve never played them, part of the appeal is the cultural jokes for the time. Most of the jokes were written by Gex’s voice actor Dana Gould. The jokes have aged considerably today. Not in an offensive way, but most gamers under the age of 20 aren’t going to get them. If you want to bring the little guy back, the jokes have to be updated for modern times. Gould has written for The Simpsons multiple times. If anything, he knows how to still bring the modern cultural punches.
Are you excited for Gex to return? Do you think his jokes will be tailored to modern time, at least? Will it be a collection or reboot? Let us know below!
