Star Wars: TOR’s Darth Malgus frustrates players a month after launch
Star Wars, as beloved as the franchise is, has had no shortage of issues throughout its lengthy legacy. We can argue until we are blue in the face about which add-on is the best or worst- prequels or sequels. And there is a list of frustrations when it comes to the video games as well. Unfortunately, the latest to fall victim to problems is Star Wars: The Old Republic. The MMO from EA and BioWare released the Legacy of the Sith expansion pack in February. The backlash was almost immediate.
A walk through the forums brings up a range of complaints, such as the game being unplayable for some. Other issues included buggy gameplay: entire combat styles becoming inaccessible, empty loot crates, and mission objectives not counting as complete. There are very short, underwhelming storylines for certain classes, most notably the saboteurs. The list goes on.
Darth Malgus will see you now
However, perhaps one of the most egregious errors is the final boss mission, where the player must battle Darth Malgus in the Ruins of Nul Flashpoint. According to the list of “known issues”, players are unable to defeat Darth Malgus, and thus are not able to complete the DLC. This bug was first noticed on February 15. 2022.
An investigation was launched two days later, and an apparent temporary fix was listed in the forums: “Current workaround for this fight is to stick with the outer perimeter of the fight (by the stone path but not beyond the pillars) when Malgus uses the ability Relentless Assault.”
The workaround has enabled some players to finish the mission, but as others noted, it isn’t an easy solution. “Sadly this workaround isn’t sure to even work, seems some can do it this way but requires a huge amount of luck as sticking to outer perimeter lowers chance of it bugging but can still happen, and with an ability he uses quite often that lowers the chance of success even more,” wrote one player.
The not so glowing silence
The questions of simply disabling the mission for the moment, or why it wasn’t fixed during a recent update persist. Now, a month later, the mission is still bugged. The last post on the thread was dated March 14th, and acknowledged the issue remains for most players. No further word has been heard from BioWare as to when the mission will receive a permanent solution.
So, if you are planning to take on Darth Malgus, beware. Your Jedi might just be another notch on his lightsaber.
