Stray Rats unveils range of Sonic the Hedgehog merchandise
It would be difficult to name a videogame character that more epitomises the traditional ideas of being ‘streetwise’ and ‘cool’ than Sonic T. Hedgehog. So it’s a veritable match made in gaming heaven that fashion label Stray Rats, known for their street-leaning clothing and accessories, has teamed up with the folks at SEGA for a line of gear starring everyone’s favourite speedy spine-spreader.
The Blue Blur is of course no stranger to such endeavours, linking up as he has with fellow designer brands Puma and Lavair in recent times, so this is right in line with series precedent. Not to mention Sonic has been mistaken for a rat himself on a few occasions (see, I know my stuff). Have to keep things thematically consistent in this biz, after all. I mean, it’s not like, I dunno, Mario would team up with the Raving Rabb – oh.
As HypeBeast reports, the line marks an addition to Stray Rats’ “its growing lineup of collaborations,” and features “graphics drawn from classic Sonic titles from past-gen consoles reinterpreted with SR’s signature visual sensibility.” Notice the term ‘past-gen’ specifically. So, probably no Infinite merch then. Bummer. Guess Hot Topic has that market cornered.
Aside from “zip-up hoodies, crewneck, T-shirts and caps,” the nostalgic collection includes the following: “knit sweaters, short sleeve shirts, polos and shorts in a variety of bold color options, a rat GRAFX zip-up hoodie, Metal Sonic T-shirt, Amy Rose rat-girl T-shirt, Sonic vs. Knuckles ringer tee and badge-covered cap.” Crikey, that’s the rent for this month gone already. Rounding out the release are the requisite accessories like “a poster, mug and pins that continue the graphics found in the apparel range.”
We will of course be laying down the Mega Visions red carpet for you all when this stuff hits the shelves. Now all we need is to draw straws on who’ll model the horrifying Tails water bottle.
Are you looking forward to this collection? Do you think this successfully captures the intended ‘cool factor’? Let us know below!
