Stray to receive a physical edition this September
Ever played a video game where you’re a cat? I concede it’s possible – especially if you’re a fan of Garfield, and subpar licensed titles. How about one in a post-apocalyptic or cyberpunk setting? Again, it’s rather likely, given that it seems almost every AAA game under the sun wants a piece of the Blade Runner pie. But let me ask you this: ever played a game where you’re a cat, IN a cyberpunk setting? Now that’s probably a smaller demographic. To anyone who didn’t put up their hand, and isn’t totally turned off by the sound of that, read on; for Stray is likely right up your alley, and it’s getting a physical release later this year.
Leading us a-Stray
A quirky, stylized puzzle game, Stray puts you in the shoes (paws? Claws?) of a wandering moggie who must navigate a harsh environment not built for such fluffiness. The catch? Things are rather hard, as said environment happens to be a post-apocalyptic, cyberpunk, robot-infested wasteland. Told you that’d become relevant. Described as a ‘desolate but hopeful’ setting, the downtrodden locale is offset by the charming antics of some of the robotic denizens and an enchanting musical score, all of which suggest things aren’t necessarily as bleak as they seem. Even though it clocks in at a meagre five hours, Stray has nonetheless found an audience among artsy gamers and has already had critics singing its praises.
Per Destructoid, “the most basic physical edition of Stray on PS4/PS5 is due on September 20, for $40, and there’s also an iam8bit exclusive edition for $45 that’s shipping in Q4 2022.” Charming or not, whether a 5 hour adventure warrants a $40 purchase is something only you can decide. As Schrödinger’s feline proved, the game must be considered simultaneously bought and unbought ’til you add it to your cart.
That pricier exclusive edition comes with a few more odds and ends, as pictured below. Nothing you’d want to give to an actual cat, though, sadly. Where’s the official Stray milk bowl at, lads?
Per the press release, “Stray‘s exclusive edition has a matte black sleeve, a 14.4″ x 24″ poster featuring our inquisitive hero, a ‘fuzzy, pettable’ chenille patch, and six art cards.” So, to boil it down: a poster, a bit of cloth, and some cards. Again, your call.
Will you be picking up this purr-fect offer? Do you wish to kill me for that pun? Let us know!
