Co-publishers Daedalic Entertainment and Nacon announced The Lord of the Rings: Gollum way back in March 2019. Not much news came out since then aside from informing fans about the game’s delay. However, now The Lord of the Rings: Gollum announces an official release date, and some people got to see a gameplay preview too. About time!
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum
Athletic and agile, sneaky and cunning. Driven by the desire to once again hold in his hands what he lost, Gollum is one of the most fascinating characters in the world of The Lord of the Rings.
He has seen things that others can not imagine, he has survived things that others would not dare mention. Torn by his split personality, he can be vicious and villainous as Gollum, but social and cautious as Sméagol.
Players get to follow Gollum’s journey from as early as a slave below the Dark Tower all the way until the Elves of Mirkwood. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum Steam listing teases it will use “stealth, agility, and cunning” in order to survive his quest. They also plan for climbing and grappling mechanics to aid the players on their journey. How Gollum faces more dangerous enemies, he may “assassinate a careless enemy” or “dispose of them in more creative and villainous ways.”
Over at PCGamer, someone got an exclusive preview of the gameplay. The reviewer notes a combination between stealth gameplay and platforming. Though they don’t sound particularly impressed, it’s possible the game has more to offer with only a short 20 minute demo being portrayed.
When does it release?
Gollum’s quest officially begins September 1, 2022 for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. At a later date, it comes to Nintendo Switch. The wait for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum won’t be too much longer now that we officially know when it’s coming out. There hasn’t been a big picture Lord of the Rings-inspired game since Shadow of War, so I’m curious to see where it’ll lead.
