This 3D Sonic fangame aims to return series to its platforming roots

It’s no secret that 3D Sonic games have had a tumultous history. Even though the first two Sonic Adventure games were well received when they were initially released, it seems many gamers don’t think they’ve aged very well, and they’re often lumped in with the mediocre Sonic games.

Of course, Sonic Generations did a great job at showcasing how a 3D Sonic game can be done, and it remains to be seen what Sonic Team will do with the upcoming Project Sonic 2017. However, a group of Sonic homebrew developers have just released Green Hill Paradise Act 2, which aims to answer the question whether a 3D Sonic game can be made that stays true to its platforming roots.

“We are here to answer this question, not through an in-depth analysis video, not through a lengthy forum post, but through a fully playable video game experience,” reads the description for Green Hill Paradise Act 2‘s Youtube video. “After 10 months of research and development we believe that, yes, Sonic can not only exist in 3D, but he can THRIVE in it.”

GHP’s massive environment, winding paths, dynamic physics and hidden collectibles provide players with the freedom to choose where they want to go and how they wish to get there,” it continued. “The only limitations are the laws of physics and the player’s own skill.”

The game cuts out spline paths, boostpads, scripted cameras and the boost button, which forces the player to “earn it” if he wants to go fast.

You can download the current version of the level here. Be sure to let us know what you think and if you believe this fixes any of the issues people have had with 3D Sonic games.
