Three new SEGA Genesis games head to the Switch
Shining Force II, Space Harrier II, and Sonic Spinball are now available via the Switch Online Expansion Pass.
If you’re a fan of playing your favorite SEGA Genesis / Mega Drive games on the Switch, then you’re in luck. Nintendo added three Genesis games to the Nintendo Switch Online service. These games include the classic tactical RPG Shining Force II; Genesis launch title Space Harrier II; and the Blue Blur’s pinball spinoff Sonic Spinball.
These three titles are available now on Nintendo Switch Online, provided you have the Expansion Pack. And if you were curious, Japanese players received the same set of games this time around.
The press release reads:
Gather your Emerald Power, shining hero, and spring into the Cosmic gate – three more out-of-this-world SEGA Genesis adventures are calling your name! Today, a trio of spin-tacular games have been added to the SEGA Genesis – Nintendo Switch Online library: Sonic The Hedgehog Spinball, Shining Force II and Space Harrier II. You can play them all right now on the Nintendo Switch™ system with a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.

All about these new SEGA Genesis games on Switch
Shining Force II is the second title in the Shining Force series developed by Sonic! Software Planning in 1993. (Nowadays, the company goes by Camelot Software Planning, famous for the Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, and Golden Sun series.) It’s also the second Shining Force game on Nintendo Switch Online, joining the original RPG.
Sonic Spinball is a pinball-inspired spinoff developed by Sega Technical Institute in 1993. One of the hedgehog’s more famous side titles, SEGA commissioned it as a stopgap while development Sonic the Hedgehog 3 stalled. It received positive reviews at launch, but retrospective opinions from both critics and fans have been mixed.
Finally, Space Harrier II was one of six launch titles for the SEGA Genesis back in 1988. A follow-up to the arcade classic Space Harrier, it emulates the high-octane arcade gameplay fairly well despite system limitations. In addition to the SEGA Genesis sequel, you can play the original Space Harrier on Switch via SEGA AGES.
