It seems odd to think that next year will be the 20th anniversary of ToeJam & Earl 3. The game was released on Xbox in 2002 after a brutal development cycle for the team. The game was initially set for the Dreamcast but moved to the Xbox after the system failed in the market. Microsoft helped SEGA co-publish the game after the fall of the Dreamcast so it could be an Xbox exclusive. The game has gained a cult following from the ToeJam & Earl fan base for its innovative gameplay for the time of its release. It’s hard to find now, even if you have an original Xbox to play it on. But that might change.
In a tweet from the official ToeJam & Earl account, they celebrate the game’s 19th birthday while also hinting that they need to do something big for the 20th anniversary next year. You can find the tweet below.
The context of the tweet could mean a multitude of things. A remaster might seem like the straightforward answer since Xbox has found a way to emulate games from their first system onto the current Xbox ecosystem. But maybe the team has thought about doing a full-on remake of the duo’s third adventure? Fans will have to wait and see what the 20th anniversary will bring next year!
