Unreleased SEGA Saturn game ‘Monica’s Castle’ discovered

First lost Dreamcast games, and now the SEGA Saturn? If you weren’t paying attention recently, we reported on the mythical Castlevania: Resurrection rising from its grave.  Dreamcast journalist Comby Laurent discovered a recently uploaded video, showing off Castlevania: Resurrection in all its prototype glory. Following that news bit, a demo of the game was uploaded to the internet.

This week, SEGA Saturn fan site SHIRO! reported on another long lost SEGA game. According to SHIRO! (and user Mr^Burns), an actual copy of Monika no Shiro exists in the wilderness. Translated to ‘Monica’s Castle’, this was an unreleased “Pioneer LDC” game for the Saturn. The game was originally developed under the name Faradoon: The Legend of Dragon Castle.

Despite promotions and a scheduled release date, the game fell off the face of the planet in 1999. Twitter user @zan2zanjp posted their discovery in the form of a video:

According to SHIRO! the tweet translates as “Well, I’ve been unearthing discs that I had put away a while ago.
I don’t have an actual machine to run it easily, so I’ll just use SSF.
” There was a follow-up tweet, showing off some of the characters and their respective cutscenes. There appears to be three characters in total.

Next, this one translates to “Is there an OP-like demo for each character?” A promotion video was sent out a long time ago. Someone uploaded the video on YouTube, and it’s pretty fascinating. You can check out the video above! The gameplay has an interesting mix of 2D sprites and 3D backgrounds.

Stories like this long lost SEGA Saturn game are the best kind to report on. Hopefully the demo gets released, just like Castlevania Resurrection‘s did! Shiro has reached out to the person for comment. As of this post, there does not seem to be any updates.
