Upcoming indie “lite-horror” Selaco offers F.E.A.R.-like vibes
Hey retro horror fans, trivia time! What does Doom, F.E.A.R. and The Outer Worlds have in common? Besides being awesome First Person Shooters, they have inspired a new retro indie project by Altered Orbit Studios called Selaco. Running on GZDoom engines and inspired by F.E.A.R. style set pieces, Selaco marries retro gaming to the future of Earth.
Set after the Earth’s apocalyptic destruction, the survivors gather in an underground facility- Selaco – where they’d hoped to, well, survive. Unfortunately, they were fresh out of dandelions wishes. Invasion, bloody, gruesome and overwhelming, soon befall the refugees. Main character Dawn is a ACE Security Captain. While investigating the mysteries lurking below the surface at Selaco, disaster happens again. The invasion of the facility by armed forces begins.
The creators have carefully crafted a first person journey, one that they promise is “an engaging and believable sci-fi story and world.” With plenty of head-popping violence and gorgeous background music, it looks to be an unforgettable ride.
Creating an emersion into Dawn’s world, the game has a number of features ready to plunge us into Selaco’s chaos. “Every single bullet will react properly with any materials or objects you hit. Our artists have created many different variations for each (voxel)object to ensure that the aftermath of each encounter is palpable,” the studio says on their Steam page. So, blow things up to your heart’s content.
As mentioned earlier, in drawing inspiration from F.E.A.R, “the enemy is fully aware of each other’s presence and work together to take you down. They will keep their distance if you apply constant pressure on them, will rush you if you hide or run out of bullets, toss grenades if you use the same cover for too long, and much more.”
One of the best features, in my opinion, is the encouragement of community mods. Like Skyrim and The Witcher, Selaco will support the porting of players’ favorite GZDoom mods. “Anything goes,” they say.
Still not sure what the heck I’m talking about? Check out the recently released video below with over 3 minutes of gameplay.
