Valve’s Steam Deck faces a delay due to supply chain issues

Valve’s upcoming portable handheld, Steam Deck, will not release during the December holiday season. Due to supply chain issues, Valve announced the inevitable delay with a tentative February 2022 launch date to keep fans in the loop.

“We’re sorry about this—we did our best to work around the global supply chain issues, but due to material shortages, components aren’t reaching our manufacturing facilities in time for us to meet our initial launch dates. Based on our updated build estimates, Steam Deck will start shipping to customers [in] February 2022. This will be the new start date of the reservation queue—all reservation holders keep their place in line but dates will shift back accordingly.”

In July, Valve revealed the Steam Deck, which resembled the shape of the Nintendo Switch but allowed players to play games from their Steam libraries whenever and wherever. Since then, three models have surfaced with varying prices and capabilities. The base edition costs $400 and is packed with 64GB of storage, while the other high-priced models hike up to $529 (256GB) and $649 (512GB). The Steam Deck will have an external display dock similar to Nintendo Switch, but as of now, official price tags on the accessory are up in the air.

It’s no secret that the world has faced supply chain setbacks, especially in the gaming industry. Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X are still hard to get your hands on, with Nintendo Switch trailing behind after their recent OLED Model launch. While the downside of delays is waiting longer, it can also be a time to knock out kinks and smoothen the experience for players.

So, are you excited to see how the Steam Deck turns out? Let us know!
