The modding community for Resident Evil continues to thrive this year. Recently, a user created a Resident Evil 2 mod that allows players to take control of the Nemesis. Now, a new mod by praydog is in the works to support VR gameplay in both RE2 and RE3.
The YouTuber Brian Tate released early footage showcasing VR gameplay. The video shows a sequence from Resident Evil 3 that starts inside the Raccoon City Police Department before moving into the city streets.
Although this mod is severely unpolished, the full support for motion controls is highly impressive. One major challenge in creating a VR mod for Resident Evil 2 and 3 is changing perspectives from third to first-person.
In its current state, the mod has some bugs to work out. One issue is the side-by-side footage. The animation for the arms also could use improvement. Currently, they appear very rubbery and deformed. However, these issues do not detract from the magnitude of being able to play these classic titles in VR. Unfortunately, I don’t believe the mod comes with a diaper for when you have to face off with the Nemesis. You’ll either have to provide that yourself or take your chances without because it’s scary enough to face him in third person. I can only imagine how VR will play out.
While there is no word on when the mods may release, Resident Evil does have a recent history with VR. The franchise’s first-person entry Resident Evil 7: Biohazard has full support on PSVR. Although Resident Evil Village is also first-person, there currently is no VR version yet for that game. However, Facebook is currently developing a VR version of Resident Evil 4 for the Oculus Quest 2.
More Resident Evil News
2021 has most definitely proven itself to be the year of Resident Evil. In addition to the upcoming VR mods for RE2 and RE3, Capcom themselves have been celebrating Resident Evil’s 25th anniversary. They recently partnered with Ubisoft in Rainbow Six Siege to introduce classic characters as skins for operators. There is also a new Resident Evil movie coming out this year. The first set of photos were recently revealed for that. Needless to say, it is an exciting time to be a Resident Evil fan.
