Dotemu announced today that the highly-anticipated Windjammers 2 will launch for PlayStation 4 on January 20.
The developers, known for their work on revitalizing retro games for modern audiences, originally ported the first Windjammers in 2016. They state that it was always their intention to develop a sequel following the port’s launch. After a couple years of delays, Dotemu is finally ready to release the sequel to the 1994 classic arcade sports game.
Dotemu additionally emphasizes the importance they hold for Windjammers 2. As it is their first game developed entirely in-house, they aimed to polish it into the ultimate sequel to the original. To do this, they state that their process also involved disassembling and studying the original code for the NEOGEO Windjammers.
The solution then was to disassemble the original code and try to understand how it worked, in order to find answers – or as my colleagues called it, ‘archaeologist work’. Deciphering code from 1994 was key to capturing the essence of Windjammers!

Dotemu built on what made the first Windjammers so rad
In addition to recreating the feel of the original game, Dotemu sought to build on it further for the sequel. One way they accomplished this was through creating new characters to flesh out the roster. They additionally tweaked existing characters and implemented new moves and abilities.
Alongside building the roster, Dotemu also wanted to add value by creating new arenas. They state that working in a larger aspect ratio gave them freedom to branch out and make larger courts. Marie states one of the most notable new courts is the casino. This arena adds a new layer to Windjammers 2 by randomly selecting the point value for the disc before the kick-off. The value can range from one to eight points and changes throughout the course of the game.
Windjammers 2 soars to PlayStation 4 on January 20, 2022. It will also be available for PlayStation 5 through backwards compatibility. In addition, you can play it on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Google Stadia and PC. Dotemu also states it will be playable through Game Pass for Xbox and PC.
